Tips for Successful DBC Networking Events
Remember the goal of networking events is to provide a “value add” for existing DBC members and to attract new members
Aim for a regional mix of informal, networking only events (dinner, cocktails) and more formal, educational events (farm tour, book author panel, etc)
Plan and advertise well in advance for more formal networking events or those with an educational component.
If you plan an educational event, the CPEU application needs to be submitted through the DBC Office 4-6 weeks ahead of the event. You’ll need 2-3 learning objectives, the event agenda and the speaker/ presenter bio or CV.
Include more spontaneous “meet-up” type networking events. Look for opportunities for an informal “meet at the bar” at state affiliate meetings and other professional conferences where there may be a critical mass of DBC members.
Determine how participants will pay if there is a cost associated with the event….eg separate checks for restaurant meals, etc. Make sure this is communicated clearly to those attending.
Include an ice-breaker, get to know you activity at all networking events to make new attendees feel welcome and included.
Occasionally host a “bring a non-member” challenge to show potential DBC members the value of networking with DBC members. Focus on those with an interest in business and communication areas. Include local students and dietetic interns.
Remember nametags for everyone-adhesive backed mailing labels can work in a pinch.
Track and measure success. Identify which types of events draw the most participants and use that information to plan future events.
Seek out restaurants and other locations with no-cost space (especially after peak hours). (Learn more about this option here).
